The Rugby World Cup: The Pinnacle of the Sport

The Rugby World Cup is the premier international competition in rugby union, held every four years. It serves as the third-largest single-sporting event in the world. The Webb Ellis Cup is awarded to the winning team.

South Africa have won the last two Rugby World Cups, and to find a team other than the Springboks or the All Blacks lifting the trophy you have to go all the way back to England’s famous victory (also in Australia) in 2003. South Africa’s victory in the 1995 tournament, hosted in the country, became a symbol of racial reconciliation when Nelson Mandela presented the Springboks with the trophy while wearing their jersey.

Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027: A New Era

The Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 will be the biggest tournament in the sport’s history, featuring 24 qualifying teams for the very first time. There will be 52 matches in total, compared to 48 in previous tournaments.

The New Format: Round of 16 Introduced

The expansion to 24 teams requires a significant format change. Previously, 20 teams were divided into four pools of five, with the top two from each progressing to quarter-finals. In 2027:

  • Teams are divided into six pools of four teams
  • The top two teams from each pool progress to the Round of 16
  • The four best third-place teams also progress
  • The Round of 16 is followed by quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final

Route to the Final

StageMatches
Pool Stage3 matches per team
Round of 16First knockout round
Quarter-finals4 matches
Semi-finals2 matches
Final1 match

Crucially, despite the extra knockout round, teams that reach the final will still play only seven matches—the same as in previous tournaments. This is because each team plays one fewer pool game (three instead of four). With mandatory minimum of five rest days between games, the tournament will be a whole week shorter than its predecessor at just 43 days.

Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 Pools

The draw took place in December 2025 and created some mouth-watering pool clashes:

PoolTeams
Pool ANew Zealand, Australia, Chile, Hong Kong China
Pool BSouth Africa, Italy, Georgia, Romania
Pool CArgentina, Fiji, Spain, Canada
Pool DIreland, Scotland, Uruguay, Portugal
Pool EFrance, Japan, USA, Samoa

The 12 teams that finished in the top three of their pools at Rugby World Cup 2023 automatically qualified. The remaining 12 places were filled through regional tournaments. Notably, Australia automatically occupies Pool A as host nation.

Women’s Rugby World Cup

The women’s game continues to grow, with World Rugby being the first major sporting federation to adopt a gender-neutral naming approach for its major tournaments. Rugby World Cup 2025 featured 12 teams and was hosted in England. New Zealand (the Black Ferns) won the 2021 tournament (played in 2022) after beating England in the final.
